Why Home and Away Scrapped ‘Towel Drop’ Scene for Show Newcomer

Home and Away spoilers ahead from Australian-pace episodes, which some UK viewers may prefer to avoid.

Newcomer Ryan Bown, who recently joined Home and Away, has shared an interesting behind-the-scenes detail about his first appearance on the show. A particular scene, originally scripted to be more revealing, was ultimately altered before it made it to air.

Back in January, it was announced that Summer Bay would soon welcome two fresh faces—Sonny and Lacey. Sonny, played by Bown, is introduced as a longtime childhood friend of Remi Carter. His debut episode has now aired in Australia, showing his arrival in an unexpected and memorable way.

Sonny’s first scene takes place just as he steps out of the shower, only to be met by Kirby Aramoana. While the moment still features him shirtless, Bown revealed during an interview on The Morning Show that the original version of the scene was meant to be even bolder.

“Interestingly, that scene was first written as a towel drop moment,” Bown explained. “The camera would have been positioned behind me, with my legs in full view as the towel fell. But in the end, the director decided against it, saying, ‘We’ve had enough towel drops—let’s move on from them.’”

Despite the change, Sonny’s introduction still makes an impression. Bown described his character as “fun-loving, charming, and cheeky.” He hinted that Sonny will have a playful and mischievous side, but ultimately, he has a good heart.

Meanwhile, Sonny isn’t the only new arrival in Summer Bay. Actress Sophea Pennington is set to make her debut as Lacey, another character who is sure to shake things up. While Australian audiences will have to wait a few more weeks for her entrance, she is expected to bring a lively energy to the show.

Pennington offered a preview of Lacey’s storyline, hinting at a flirtation with Theo Poulos. “Lacey arrives with the River Boys, so she has a wild streak,” she shared. “She’s fun, full of life, but deep down, she’s got a kind heart. She and Theo immediately click, and sparks fly between them.”

While Australian fans are already getting to know Sonny, UK viewers will have to wait until April to see his first appearance. With both Sonny and Lacey bringing fresh energy and new dynamics to Summer Bay, their arrivals are set to add plenty of drama, romance, and excitement to Home and Away.
